Overcoming disruption and adapting in the new environment

Value chains are becoming much more complex. With the rise of internet based commerce, and the disruptive technologies of smartphones and tablets, customers can enjoy a true 24/7 shopping experience, choosing their point of service and delivery. E-commerce is growing at an unprecedented rate in Asia Pacific, driven by faster internet services and, in many markets, almost universal mobile uptake. In light of this, the region is set to become the largest digital retail market in the world, offering opportunities for both global online retailers. According to market research company eMarketer, retail e-commerce sales in Asia Pacific are projected to reach US$1.15tr this year, taking up more than half of the global market.

In stage one of The Picking Jungle series, we set out to clear the jungle with appropriate tools and maps we started hacking into the problem. Now we are Ready, Set, ...Pick! In this stage we continue to beat the jungle into submission with more tools such as Value Stream Mapping, The 5S System, and Lean principles. Together we will explore the answers to the most critical questions that will turn chaos into order:

  • What is Wave Release?
  • I'm lost in the detail of paper picklists, will RF or Voice help me?
  • Why should I make the Picker king of my warehouse?
  • What's that giraffe doing on my racking?
  • With Omni Channel well and truly alive, now Gartner is talking Bi-Modal …. where does my picking strategy fit into all this?

This disruption to fulfilment operations is imposing complexity; radically different volumes; the need for greater agility, flexibility and responsiveness in fulfilment; and inevitably major erosions in profitability to serve. The supply chain is becoming more volatile and companies have to adapt to respond more profitably and effectively.
